Brought to You By Bobby Navarro

The Port of Los Angeles welcomed a troupe of the world’s greatest international brewers, artisan mead makers and local brewmasters to pour their finest at The Festival. Geniuses over at Shelton Brothers importers partnered with Brian Mercer of Brouwerij West (to open early 2015!) to bring The Festival over to the West Coast. In so doing the pair orchestrated a paramount utopian beer gathering for beer geeks to indulge in. I’m sure the brewer from Jester King could tell you that this is the South-by-Southwest of beer festivals: limitless options, and not a single bad beverage in the mix.

The FestivalEuropean breweries clearly outnumbered American representation (although Taylor Hanson of the Hanson brothers stood bravely in the face of international competition, pouring samples of his flagship beer, “Mmmhops!”) Oh yeah, Emilio Estevez and Westvketeren XII were there too.

Sour Power

The FestivalThe typical beer festival is often filled with an abundance of IPA’s. However at The festival, sour beer was everywhere! An array of the most sought out sours, gueuzes, lambics, wild ales and krieks were lined up in full glory ready to be sipped up. Cantillon offerings made many beer geeks smile with glee; pouring the infamous Classic Gueuze, Fou’Foune and Iris. Looking into the future I see sour beers increasing their presence at festivals.

Mikkeller & Brasserie Brouwerij Cantillon

Mikkeller The Festivalrepresentative (and director of research) Mixen Lindberg was pouring  rare bottles of Beer Geek Dessert and collaboration beer with Three Floyds, Bla Spog Else (blue ghost). That being said, sampling Mikkeller beers is like enjoying a five course meal. Bla Spog Else is a tart, dark and refreshing brew that electrifies the taste buds. Beer Geek Dessert serves as an appropriate finale to the infamous “Beer Geek” series. Ever drunk a donut? If you haven’t, here’s your chance.

Owner and 4th generation Brewmaster Jean-Pierre Van Roy addressed a group twelve people a time serving his new experimental brew “High Gravity”. For the cost of only 2 tickets, you could not only sample this one-off, experimental brew, but have it poured for you by the brewmaster himself, followed by a brief discussion of the brewing process and characteristics of the final product.
